Getting To Rwanda

RWANDA TRAVEL GUIDE

How To Get To Rwanda?

Arriving in Rwanda begins with landing at Kigali International Airport, the country’s main gateway. Many visitors choose to stay in Kigali overnight to recover from their flight and prepare for their journey ahead. So, doesn’t matter if you’re going to the city centre or the famous gorilla parks, Rwanda’s roads take you through some picturesque landscapes.

The main roads are in good condition, allowing for comfortable travel, although they are not as fast as those in many Western countries. More remote paths, especially those leading to the parks, offer a more rugged, adventurous experience.

Air Travel to Rwanda

Arrive in Rwanda through Kigali and start on a breathtaking journey from vibrant city streets to serene gorilla sanctuaries.

Rwanda’s connectivity by air is both robust and comprehensive, making it easily accessible from various international locations:

  • Kigali International Airport (KGL) – It is the main hub, situated just 12km from the city centre, with the drive taking about 25 minutes. The airport facilitates easy entry into the country with its efficient services and a welcoming atmosphere.
  • International Flights – RwandAir connects Rwanda to the world with flights to cities like Brussels, London, Dubai, Mumbai, and Guangzhou. Additionally, it serves major African cities such as Cape Town and Dar es Salaam. Other international carriers including Ethiopian Airlines, KLM, and Turkish Airlines also provide regular services to and from Rwanda.
  • Domestic Flights – There is a less frequented domestic route operated by RwandAir between Kigali and Kamembe Airport near Lake Kivu. This route is primarily used by locals rather than tourists.

The availability of numerous flights helps ensure that travellers can find suitable options that align with their schedules and travel plans.

Road Travel and Transfers

Going around Rwanda by road reveals the country’s scenic beauty and geographic diversity:

  • Transfers from Kigali – The journey from Kigali to destinations like Volcanoes National Park is not only scenic but also an introduction to Rwanda’s natural beauty. The roads, while slower, offer a peaceful drive.
  • Road Conditions – While Rwanda’s main roads are well-maintained and safe, secondary roads, especially those near the parks, can be challenging and require careful navigation. These routes are part of the adventure, bringing travellers closer to Rwanda’s raw and untamed environments.
  • Travel Recommendations – For those unfamiliar with the region, hiring a driver-guide is advisable. These professionals are not only skilled in navigating the varied terrain but also provide insights into the local culture and history, enriching the travel experience.

The road network, though slower, provides a unique opportunity to view the countryside and experience the local way of life up close.
